Thanks for sharing your journey. Good insights into the writing life. Melville's mind,too, and U.S.Grant, writing his entire 400 page autobiography in longhand in one fell swoop, and then dying 4 days after its completion, is illustrative. He had it all in his head; I don't think there was extensive editing of what he wrote. I hear his autobio is pretty highly regarded as a literary work, as well as historical work.
